Job Description

Infection Control RN for Long Term Care Facility

1. Plan, develop, organize, evaluate and coordinate the Infection Control Program in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern such requirements in Long Term Care facilities.

2. Develop, maintains, and periodically update infection control precautions and aseptic techniques that successfully correct problem areas.

 3. Reviews and evaluates the nursing unit staff and makes recommendations to the Assistant Director of Nursing concerning professional practices, adherence to proper procedures and disciplinary actions.

4. Ensures that infection control safety standards are maintained by the nursing staff.

5. Makes rounds on nursing units to review environment sanitation procedures, and supervise infection control practices.

 6. Reviews and analyzes lab reports and consult with the Assistant Director of Nursing in developing the care plan for the resident.

7. Evaluates and instructs staff on the implementation of infection control practice and reports findings to CNM and nurse managers on all shifts.

8. Provides the Assistant Director of Nursing with a report of pertinent findings and recommendations pertaining to nosocomial infections.

9. Maintains a written record of all residents placed in isolation or on infection control   precautions, as well as those residents and employees who have nosocomial infections.

10. Monitors infection control practices and procedures to ensure that all personnel are utilizing Universal Precautions.

11. Ensures that all personnel follow the Exposure Control Plan for the disposal and removal of infective and contaminated materials from the facility.

12. Maintains confidentiality of information concerning residents and staff.

13. Assists the Director of Housekeeping in developing infection control procedures.  (This will include laundry practices for the handling of soiled linen, cleaning of the facility and specific guidelines for Isolation).

14.  Participates in Nursing New Hire orientation program and in service programs for the Department of Nursing and other related departments.

15. Attends and participates in continuing education programs designed to facilitate knowledge.

16.  Acts as a resource nurse to all levels of the nursing staff.

17. Prepares “monthly” summaries of special investigation on the occurrence of nosocomial and Community acquired infections.

18.  Performs administrative duties such as completing infection control reports, evaluations, studies, and charting.  Review all medical forms and offer recommendations whenever necessary.

19.  Maintains a reference library of written infection control material that will assist the facility in meeting the day to day needs of all residents and those who, from time to time, need to be separated, or isolated.

A minimum of 2 years of experience as a staff nurse, a minimum of 1 year experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long term care facility or other related medical facility and a minimum of 1 year experience supervising and implementing infection control programs.


Associate’s Degree in Nursing Required.

Bachelor’s Degree or MSN from an accredited university preferred.

Must possess a current NYS RN license and certification in infection control. 

Knowledge of federal and state regulations.  Must be able to speak, write and read English. Strong clinical competencies, communications and writing skills and the ability to manage staff and resources required.
