What are we looking for in our Manufacturing Controls Engineer?

Job Title: Manufacturing Controls Engineer L5

Location: Louisville, KY

Role Type: 100% onsite with 25 to 30% travel. Travel to sites 25-30% travel involved. Candidate will have reimbursement and will be travelling to IL, KY and TN sites majorly.

Duration: 6 months

Pay rate: $55/hr. - $65/hr. on W2 (Based on experience)

The Manufacturing Controls Engineer will develop, implement, and support electrical and automation systems across our North American Manufacturing (NAM) facilities. This role requires expertise in control systems, PLC programming, HMI design, and troubleshooting automation equipment. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the efficient and safe operation of manufacturing processes, drive continuous improvement, and maintain compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and Development:

◦              Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMI (Human-Machine Interface), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for manufacturing processes.

◦              Develop control strategies to optimize the performance of production equipment.

◦              Create electrical schematics and control panel layouts.

◦              Collaborate with the design and production teams to integrate control systems into new equipment and processes.

  1. Installation and Commissioning:

◦              Oversee the installation and commissioning of automated systems, ensuring proper setup and functionality.

◦              Program and configure variable frequency drives (VFDs), servo motors, and other automated equipment.

◦              Conduct FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SAT (Site Acceptance Tests) to ensure that systems meet performance and safety standards.

  1. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

◦              Provide technical support for electrical and control systems, diagnosing and resolving issues in a timely manner.

◦              Monitor system performance and make adjustments as needed to improve efficiency and reliability.

◦              Develop and maintain documentation, including control system schematics, software, and operational manuals.

  1. Continuous Improvement:

◦              Identify opportunities for improving manufacturing efficiency and quality through automation and control system upgrades (line balancing).

◦              Lead and participate in root cause analysis for equipment failures and process inefficiencies.

◦              Implement best practices for predictive maintenance, automation standards, and safety protocols.

  1. Compliance and Safety:

◦              Ensure all control systems comply with industry standards, such as OSHA, NEC, and IEC.

◦              Develop and enforce safety protocols related to electrical and control systems.

◦              Stay updated on relevant industry technologies, regulations, and trends.

  1. Collaboration:

◦              Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to ensure that control systems are seamlessly integrated with other systems.

◦              Collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality teams to support the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in controls engineering within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA development (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition).
  • Knowledge of electrical design tools (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
  • Strong understanding of industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Familiarity with machine safety standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 13849).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and P&ID diagrams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with robotics, vision systems, and advanced automation technologies.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and IoT technologies in manufacturing.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily in a manufacturing plant environment with occasional office work.
  • May require travel to other company facilities or vendor locations.
  • May involve exposure to high temperatures, noise, and hazardous materials.

 

Certifications & Licenses: Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric)
