Job Description

Prestigious Long Island hospital seeks a Director of Nursing to oversee the overall direction and daily operational activities of the Emergency Department including planning, budget, personnel, quality improvement, coordinating clinical services, policy development and collaboration with Department Chairman, administration and departments/services to ensure service excellence and high quality patient care.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures that patient care is delivered by qualified and competent nursing staff.  Ensures development of master staffing plan for Emergency Department in accordance with the plan for the provision of patient care.  
  • Determines the required qualifications and competence of departmental nursing personnel who provide patient care.  Ensures orientation, in-service training, continuing education of staff, and appropriate related documentation in all employee files.  
  • Effectively works with management staff to identify opportunities for performance improvement and assists in the development of performance improvement plans.  Ensures that Employee Job Descriptions are reviewed and revised as needed. Assesses staff competency and completes written performance reviews annually.
  • Supports the organization’s mission to provide excellence in patient care.  Participates in establishment, evaluation, and revision of the plan for provision of patient care based on the patient population served.  
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care.  Develops, implements and evaluates business plans, policies and procedures for patient care in collaboration with Administration and Department Chairman.  
  • Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement concepts and the ability to participate in developing and implementing strategies to address opportunities for improving the delivery of patient care.  Provides leadership for multidisciplinary process improvement activities for unit specific and hospital wide initiatives.  Participates in hospital and medical staff committees.
  • Oversees annual budget preparation in conjunction with Department Chairman, Nurse Managers and Assistant Nurse Managers, including capital, supply, and personnel needs.  Monitors, evaluates and adjusts budgetary needs to ensure cost containment and appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Pursues learning opportunities, remaining current with clinical and management practices and trends.  Keeps abreast of latest developments, trends, and advancements in nursing.
  • Provides educational opportunities for professional growth and development of staff.  Establishes a working environment that stimulates employees to set and achieve goals and objectives.
  • Actively participates in the assessment, recommendations and acquisition of technologies to improve services, processes and productivity for the delivery of patient care.  Utilizes management reports and metrics to support decision making, planning and evaluation related to operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed Registered Nurse
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • At least 5 years clinical nursing leadership experience in an acute care setting.
  • Emergency Room experience required
